Basic Rights Oregon is a nonprofit advocacy organization founded to combat a series of anti-LGBTQ+ ballot measures that had plagued the state for decades. Headquartered in Portland, it has grown into Oregon’s leading political and educational force for LGBTQ2SIA+ equality. The organization operates both a 501(c)(4) for political advocacy and a 501(c)(3) Basic Rights Education Fund for public education and community engagement.

Its mission is to ensure that all LGBTQ2SIA+ Oregonians experience equality by building a broad and inclusive politically powerful movement, shifting public opinion, and achieving policy victories. Over the years, Basic Rights Oregon has led successful campaigns for comprehensive nondiscrimination laws, domestic partnerships, marriage equality, bans on conversion therapy, and expanded access to gender-affirming healthcare. The organization also focuses on racial justice, transgender rights, and rural community inclusion, recognizing the intersectional challenges within the LGBTQ+ community.

Through legislative advocacy, public education, leadership development, and coalition-building, Basic Rights Oregon continues to work toward a vision where all LGBTQ2SIA+ individuals in Oregon live free from discrimination and are treated with dignity and respect in every community.
