{{{description}}} The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a nationwide mental health support service in the United States, launched in July 2022 as an evolution of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. By dialing or texting 988, individuals are connected to trained crisis counselors who offer free, confidential support for mental health emergencies, emotional distress, or substance use concerns.

The Lifeline operates through a network of over 200 crisis centers, ensuring that calls are routed to the nearest available support. Specialized services are accessible for veterans, as well as for Spanish speakers and members of marginalized communities. The transition to the 988 number aimed to simplify access to mental health resources, similar to how 911 serves physical emergencies.
